KMC could save lives of babies with low birth weight
Lead author Dr. Ellen Boundy and senior author Dr. Grace Chan, public health researchers at Harvard University in Boston, said, “Despite the evidence of numerous benefits to infants who receive kangaroo mother care, its overall use around the world remains low, and uptake varies greatly across setting and providers”. Now scientists have found that kangaroo-style infant care indeed dramatically reduces the risk of the newborn dying prematurely.

Premature babies had a 36 percent reduced risk of dying prematurely if they were treated with kangaroo care.
Boundy, Sc.D., from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the correlation between KMC and neonatal outcomes.
Furthermore, these results were consistent across low-, middle- and high-income countries, prompting the researchers to declare that KMC practice is beneficial for all newborns and mothers.
Indore: Concerning over alarming rise in infant mortality, the State Government has made a decision to develop maiden Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) unit in Chacha Nehru Hospital through which premature babies will get natural care. This kind of is believed to help regulate the newborn’s temperature and breathing rate. Another explanation could be that the with the kangaroo care, mother can spot signs of infection early on and seek medical attention.
Children born pre-term or have low birth weight, have increased risk of death, serious illness, developmental delays and chronic diseases. KMC can therefore be of particular importance in such areas, as well as also being an effective treatment in developed countries.
It has been found that an estimated four million infants every year die during their first four weeks after birth.
She also found that premature babies receiving KMC slept better, adjusted their heartbeats and body temperatures to their mother’s, absorbed immune benefits from their mother’s skin, and show improved brain development compared to those that didn’t receive KMC.
The researchers were also not clear why kangaroo mother care might be beneficial for the babies.
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a special way of taking care of low birth weight babies.
“Kangaroo care”, which is the process in which mothers hold their babies against the chest, skin-to-skin, with a blanket over the child, was first introduced in the 1970s by a doctor in Colombia who encouraged that parents practice this as an alternative to incubators, which were at the time not readily available in parts of the world.

“Maternal deprivation during the critical post-birth period carries detrimental long term effects for all mammalian young”, Feldman, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. An important mainstay of kangaroo mother care is breastfeeding encouragement. Several other research materials which were reviewed also included exclusive birth feeding and follow-ups in their definition of practice, UPI reported.
