The climate deal, which commits almost 200 countries for the first time to take steps over time to cut their greenhouse gas pollution, is the crowning achievement of Obama’s environment legacy. But it allows for some “flexibility” for developing countries that “need it”.

The agreement says all countries must report on their emissions and their efforts the reduce them. It limits average global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial temperatures and strives for a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) if possible.

Under the agreement, poor nations will also be provided will financial assistance from wealthy countries to help implement policies and mechanisms which will effectively scale down emissions, The Guardian wrote Monday. He said: “In fact, the Government has been taking us backwards on climate change action, including by cutting support for feed-in tariffs and the solar industry”.

The agreement reached here on Saturday will, if faithfully carried out, achieve far larger cuts in emissions than any previous climate accord.

The Paris Agreement will be deposited at the United Nations in NY and opened for one year for signature from 22 April 2016.

USA secretary of state John Kerry described the agreement as a “tremendous victory” for all of the planet and for future generations.
