The group says the airport was its main protest target and used the mall disturbance as a decoy.
Some of the dispersed protesters left the mall and boarded trains to the airport, CNN affiliate WCCO reported. She said she believes it was effective. Numerous signs were posted on mall property saying that no protests were allowed – including a long message on a screen in a central rotunda between two Christmas trees.
Black Lives Matter protesters shut down the Mall of America on Wednesday afternoon after a judge ruled that the mall couldn’t ban their protest. He said the protest caused some flight delays but no cancellations. He said police are out in full force to ensure a smooth Christmas Eve travel day, though said he doesn’t anticipate a repeat of Wednesday’s events.
Four people were arrested at the mall for trespassing or disorderly conduct violations.
According to the BBC, a total of 15 people were arrested at both locations for obstruction of justice or trespassing.
The Minnesota mall, often described as the biggest shopping center in the U.S., had tried but failed to get a court order to bar the protesters – a move activists said only strengthened their resolve to disrupt shopping on one of the biggest days in the year for retailers. Paul International Airport. “Significant traffic backups” were caused as a result of the protests, the airport said.
The governor says he questions the need for this type of demonstration. Dayton says protesters’ call for the release of video footage of the Clark altercation has to wait, so it doesn’t jeopardize the integrity of the investigation that he says everyone wants.
The privately owned mall said another demonstration would mean lost sales. “You have to ask, ‘Would you want us to permit a demonstration by white supremacists?’ Of course not”.
The mall’s attempt this week to get a judge to shut down the protest failed, in part. Demonstrators remained in the Mall of America for about an hour and a half.
Protesters are angry over a police shooting of a black man in Minneapolis. The 24-year-old died the day after he was shot in north Minneapolis by police responding to an assault complaint.
The mall opened at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the protest is planned for 1:30 p.m.

A similar demonstration drew hundreds of protesters to the mall last December and forced some stores to close.
