Sri Lanka lose Malinga ahead of New Zealand ODIs
New Zealand’s Matt Henry appeals for a dismissal against Sri Lanka. He was replaced by Tom Latham, with Henry Nicholls promoted to make his global debut. Both sides will also be wary of the injuries to some players over the last few days.

Trent Boult (R) and Brendon McCullum (2nd L) of New Zealand celebrate after taking the wicket of Kithuruwan Vithanage of Sri Lanka during day one of the International Test cricket against Sri Lanka at Seddon Park in Hamilton on December 18, 2015.
“Once we got a partnership underway we knew it was going to be tough for the bowlers on a wicket on which there was just no margin for error”.
The 32-year-old, who has taken 291 wickets in 191 ODIs, has failed to recover from the injury he sustained against the West Indies last month.
“He’s feeling some discomfort in his knee”.
Siriwardana showed great fighting qualities in reaching his second half century and highest score in one-day internationals, remaining composed when he came to the crease with the Sri Lanka innings in disarray.
New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan believes Malinga’s injury is a “big loss”. “If it’s not, Tom is the man we’ll bring in as cover”.
Injuries apart, the home side have a clear advantage over Sri Lanka in terms of numbers.
Lasith Malinga’s participation in T20I series against New Zealand is also under doubt.
Brendon McCullum raced to a quickfire half century before holing out for 55 off 24 balls to Milinda Siriwardana, but the captain put on 108 runs for the first wicket with Martin Guptill – at more than 10 an over.
“What a contributor Malinga has been over a number of years for Sri Lanka”, McMillan said.

Williamson was a late omission from the first game of the five-match series against Sri Lanka at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval. The series is five matches, with the next two at Nelson’s Saxton Oval on New Year’s Eve and January the 2nd, followed by the final game at Mount Maunganui on Tuesday the 5th.
