Burns has had a lean few tests but his partnership with opener David Warner has been a success since the series-opener against New Zealand last month.
Burns was on 27, with Khawaja, back in the side after recovering from a hamstring injury, on 18 in front of a festive Boxing Day crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Queensland left-hander slots back into number three in the batting order, with Smith dropping back down to his preferred number four position.
Andre Russell was the next top scorer for the Thunder with 22, while Mike Hussey chimed in with 16 off 11.
Imagine how much money the government could make if it conducted a raffle where the victor got to play a Test match for Australia.
“We were always talking about what’s coming up as well”, Smith said.
“They’ve had great success in the past against us and other teams”. “There was a lot more drive in his deliveries and everything like that”, said Simmons. “I might have a hit indoors in the morning to get a bit of confidence up before play”.
“I’ve been here before but not to play in a Boxing Day Test. The majority of the guys haven’t been here before to play in a Boxing Day Test either”.
“There were lots of talks about it”, Australia captain Steve Smith told reporters at the MCG ahead of the Boxing Day clash.
“While the lack of batting support for Bravo and Brathwaite in Hobart was a major issue, the lack of incision from the bowling attack after the first session of the Test – in which they claimed three wickets – set the tone for the match”. “I’m good to go”.
Legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who was also considered a possible replacement for Gabriel, was unavailable for selection after injuring his left shoulder in training.
