Star Wars on course to land U.S. box office record

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” this weekend challenged the foreign and worldwide box office records set by the dinosaurs of “Jurassic World”, and impressively did it without benefiting from the world’s second-largest movie market, China.
Thanks to the massive debut of “The Force Awakens” the overall box office for all movies this weekend also broke a record, bringing in over $300 million for the first time in history.
It smashed the biggest Friday and biggest single-day record in North America, exceeding the 91 million USA dollars of “Deathly Hallows 2” by 29.5 million.
By weekend’s end, The Force Awakens could soar past $245 million to lock down the biggest opening weekend ever, toppling the previous champ, Jurassic World’s $208 million opening, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
The Walt Disney Co., which also owns production company Lucasfilm and ABC News, announced Sunday that the film obliterated the all-time domestic debut record by raking in an estimated $238 million in ticket sales.
The force was indeed with the latest entry in the “Star Wars” franchise over the weekend, “The Force Awakens”.
“The Force Awakens” falls just behind the worldwide record for an opening weekend. The record holder for the biggest opening during the month was “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which took in $85 million in domestic receipts in 2012.
Biggest December debut (nearly 3 times previous record of $84.6M).
The movie, directed by J.J. Abrams, scored a 95 percent positive rating on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans eager to see the first “Star Wars” movie in a decade came dressed as Stormtroopers or Jedi.
