Thirteen counties in Tennessee reported damage, with a post office destroyed and a state highway washed out. Reuters news agency described “significant damage” to the southwestern portion of town, based on information from a National Weather Service forecaster. Five injuries were reported there and two additional severe injuries were reported near Shannon Airport, in the Clarksdale, Mississippi area, the department said.
“I laid down on the ground, and here came the tornado”, Lance Meeks, who lives in Holly Springs, Mississippi, told CNN affiliate WTVA. Eight Days of Hope Ministries collected Christmas presents for tornado victims in Holly Springs, and other churches were posting messages of support on Twitter. He cut up fallen trees not far from Goodwin’s home. “And I don t know why I m still standing here talking to you”. Two died in a home nearby. One person is unaccounted for in the state.
A seven-year-old boy was among those killed.
At least 14 people were confirmed dead seven of them in MS, including a 7-year-old boy who perished while riding in a auto that was swept up and tossed by storm winds. The driver of a tractor-trailer received minor injuries when the storm blew his rig over.
Emergency officials say six people have been confirmed dead in MS while searches continue for people missing in communities with severe storm damage. An insurance agent told the couple Thursday their home was a total loss.
About 120 miles east of the tornado, Brandi Holland, a convenience store clerk in Tupelo, Mississippi, said people were reminded of a tornado that damaged or destroyed more than 2,000 homes and businesses in April 2014.
Several roads and bridges were flooded, he said, and it was impossible to determine if they were still safe to drive on, he said.
Newly homeless, Perkins said she was happy just to be alive especially after learning two of her neighbors had died in the storm.
Benton County Sheriff A.A. McMullen said Thursday that the four people killed in his area were 69-year-old Max Croxton and his wife, 67-year-old Ellen Croxton, both of Faulkner; 67-year-old William E. Crawford, of Lamar; and 58-year-old Patricia G. Williams, of Lamar. The baby was hospitalized.

More severe weather is also predicted for Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, with tornadoes possible. “With such a big temperature contrast across the country, conditions were ripe for a severe weather outbreak”.
