Israeli-Palestinian Violence Clouds Christmas in Bethlehem
The city was quiet on Thursday, although violence raged elsewhere in the West Bank. But before the celebrations began, three Palestinians were killed after Israeli authorities said they were involved in attacks against Israelis in the West Bank.

Palestinians held a vigil on Christmas day, in Gaza City, to pay tribute to Palestinians who have been killed recently by Israeli troops. “[I am] privileged, because not everyone has the opportunity to come here”, she said.
Near-daily Palestinian attacks have killed 20 Israelis and an American student.
In the first incident, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the attacker approached the entrance to an industrial zone in the Ariel settlement and stabbed two security guards, wounding them moderately, before they shot and killed him. Three Palestinians are killed and three Israelis injured, one critically, in the West Bank. Despite a nine-year legal battle, tremendous diplomatic lobby efforts and civil resistance, Israel continues to build the annexation wall in Cremisan, leaving 58 Palestinian Christian families robbed of their lands. The Palestinians say it is rooted in frustrations stemming from almost five decades of Israeli occupation.
“We’re in Bethlehem celebrating Christmas, celebrating the birthday of our lord Jesus Christ”, Rula Maayah, the Palestinian tourism minister, told the AP. Palestinian vendors hawked coffee, tea and Santa hats. Children sold sticks of gum.
A Palestinian security officer said Friday the suspects set fire Wednesday to the tree in Zababdeh, a village near Jenin populated mainly by Christians.
In recent years, Bethlehem had enjoyed a relative calm and thousands of revelers and pilgrims poured into Manger Square each Christmas.
This year’s Christian festivities took place under the shadow of the Palestinian terror plaguing the country since September. “That’s an example of the ongoing political tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians”, Fox News’ John Huddy said Thursday.
Born in poverty in a cave-like stable, He, who is truly God, came to save us, to forgive our sins and to raise us to new life, and to give us the energy to work towards a better world.
Israel’s Christmas gifts to Bethlehem this year serve towards consolidating the separation between Bethlehem and its twin city, Jerusalem; the city where Jesus was born and the city where he was resurrected – the essence of the Christian faith.
Another season of Zionist violence and dispossession in the Holy Land. The Rev. Simon Hijazeen of St. Justin’s Latin Church in Nablus did not decorate his church and parish home in colorful lights this year. “We had to close it down” because there wasn’t enough business, said Johnny Kattan, a manager at Jacir Palace Hotel, a luxury property that has the misfortune of being located a few hundred yards from an Israeli military checkpoint that is the target of violent demonstrations.
“The government here has helped us, and we can go to them if we have problems”, Jilder said.
Its spokesmen claimed to be guarding Christian shrines and pilgrims against Islamic State efforts to mar the festival.

Earlier Baboun, herself a Christian, defended the Palestinian leadership’s decision to play down the festivities.
