India welcomes rule-breaker Modi’s surprise Pakistan visit

Narendra Modi is the fourth Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan while 10 out of 14 Indian prime ministers have never been to Pakistan, a leading newspaper said on Saturday.

Pakistan rejects the accusation but it has struggled to turn around perceptions in Afghanistan, where social media users sent out a stream of glowing commentary on Modi’s visit, contrasting the parliament building with the destruction wrought by Taliban suicide bombers.

Also, the presence of an Indian industrialist in Lahore, who had arranged a one-to-one meeting between Modi and Sharif on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Kathmandu a year ago, to attend Sharif’s birthday as well as the wedding of his granddaughter, doesn’t seem a coincidence.

Hali says India and Pakistan had been on the verge of animosity and hostility, but both sides tried to revive dialog, and have been successful in breaking the ice. “We don’t expect much from this visit”, he said. “And all of us in the region – India, Pakistan, Iran and others – must unite in trust and cooperation behind the common goal and in recognition of our common destiny”.
