Russian Federation and India signed agreements on Thursday boosting cooperation in energy and defence, New Delhi aiming to modernise its armed forces and build a nuclear industry and sanctions-hit Moscow seeking investment and new markets.
Affirming that their cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy is a cornerstone of the Russia-India strategic partnership, the two leaders appreciated the progress made in the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project and agreed to expedite the implementation of ongoing and upcoming projects there.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a “courageous step” in boosting bilateral ties between India and Pakistan by his surprise visit to Lahore today, chairman of Observer Research Foundation Sudheendra Kulkarni said here today.
Reliance Defense, an Indian arms firm, said Thursday that it signed a manufacturing and maintenance deal worth about $6 billion with the Russia’s Almaz-Antey, which produces the S-400 surface-to-air missiles. India is also involved in design and production of Russia’s new T-50 stealth fighter, but has not yet committed to the $10 billion deal. Delhi and Moscow, however, sought to initiate a process to promote cultural and people-to-people links at the annual summit.
Sharif, who attended Modi’s inauguration as prime minister a year ago, invited his Indian counterpart to Pakistan when they met in Russian Federation in July. Earlier, it was said that the two leaders would meet at the airport but upon his arrival, the two PMs, after warmly hugging each other, walked on red carpet towards the chopper while holding one another’s hands to leave for Sharif’s private palace at Jhati Umra, Raiwand in suburbs of Lahore.
The two then went to Sharif’s ancestral home, the Raiwind Palace, where they held talks for almost an hour.
In the joint press statement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Modi said, “The pace of our cooperation in nuclear energy is increasing”.
Initial optimism about a revival of ties was short lived as the two countries traded heavy fire across their disputed border in the Himalayan territory of Kashmir which claimed dozens of lives on both sides.

In an obvious reference to Pakistan, Modi said there were “some who did not want us to be here”.
