US National Weather Service meteorologist Jody Aaron said the twister touched down in the south-western part of Birmingham at about 5pm and appeared to have caused “significant damage”.

A tornado has struck Birmingham, Alabama, damaging houses, uprooting trees and injuring at least three people in the state’s largest city, law enforcement and weather officials say. ‘Details are still sketchy, ‘ said Jason Holmes, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said.
The AP reported that the tornado was part of the same cell that authorities had warned about earlier in the day in Tuscaloosa County, southwest of Jefferson.
Families across the US South have spent Christmas Eve taking stock of their losses after an unusual outbreak of December tornadoes and other violent weather killed at least 14 people and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes.
The MEMA also said that there were 60 storm-related injuries in MS, adding that several counties reported flash flooding on Friday due to a stalled front over the state. But the agency is warning resident there and in neighboring Chilton County to take cover.
In neighbouring Kentucky, the National Weather Service in Louisville says a flash flood watch has been issued for central and eastern parts of the state through mid-afternoon.
Six people in Tennessee and one person in Arkansas also died in connection to the storms. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said the victims were a 19-year-old female and two 22-year-old males.
Some survivors of deadly storms across the Southeast lost their homes and belongings, but say they’re thankful to see another Christmas. But Perkins – who survived hunkered down inside a closet with her husband – said she was happy just to be alive.
He managed to climb inside and fetch some Christmas gifts that had been under his tree, but his neighbours weren’t so fortunate.

“You kind of stop and realize what Christmas is all about”, Perkins said. Two neighbours had died in the storm.
