Residents trapped underneath rubble as tornado hits Alabama
A tornado has struck Birmingham, Alabama, damaging houses, uprooting trees and injuring at least three people in the state’s largest city, law enforcement and weather officials said.

The funnel was spotted by witnesses outside the city around 5 p.m. An hour later the National Weather Service confirmed that first responders were on the scene along Jefferson Avenue, a working class neighborhood outside Birmingham.
Several people were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Edwards said several houses were damaged, trees were toppled and power was knocked out in the area.
“It makes you thankful to be alive with your family”, he said.
Friday evening the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said it received reports of another death and another missing person attributed to the severe weather system.
Other storms in Alabama since Thursday have produced flooding downpours, leading Gov. Robert Bentley to declare a state of emergency.
As of 6:45 pm, the severe weather threat looks to be subsiding, but Alabama will continue to watch for the chance of severe weather for the rest of the evening.
Some people who survived the storms were thankful just to see another Christmas.
Barbara Perkins and her husband were hunkered down inside a closet when violent winds peeled the roof off their MS home. At least 14 people were confirmed dead – seven of them in MS, including a 7-year-old boy who perished while riding in a auto that was swept up and tossed by storm winds. A visiting insurance agent told them the house was a total loss.
So far, the storms have caused widespread damage to more than 100 homes and businesses in Mississippi. Goodwin’s neighbors weren’t so fortunate.
Peak tornado season in the South is in the spring, but storms can happen any time.

Despite being newly homeless, Perkins said the tragedy helped her “stop and realize what Christmas is all about”. Seven people died in MS and one person was killed in Arkansas.
