We easily could have gone for a seventh season, but if I’d have said “We haven’t got Maggie” it would have been a shadow of itself.

Edith also reconciled with Bertie’s mother, played by Patricia Hodge – best known in recent years for her role in BBC One comedy Miranda – after revealing she had a secret illegitimate daughter.

However, if members of the cast didn’t want to continue, it wouldn’t have been the same.

Downton Abbey debuted on ITV in 2010 and became a global phenomenon, collecting numerous awards along the way.
