Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney dropped to bench for Stoke clash
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney declared on Thursday that he and his team-mates are “fighting” to save the job of embattled manager Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal walked out of his weekly press conference on Wednesday after accusing the media of trying to undermine him in his position as United manager.
United captain Wayne Rooney insists the players are fighting to ease the pressure on the manager and reverse the club’s fortunes. “I’m working hard to improve that and try and do my best for the team”. “But, in reality, the people who are writing that stuff don’t really know anything”.
United have failed to win any of their last six matches in all competitions, a run which has seen them exit the Champions League and slump to fifth place in the table.
Asked about his future, Van Gaal said: “The club doesn’t have to fire or sack me – sometimes I do it by myself”. Rooney sympathised with the Dutchman.
“That’s part of football”.
“The last few weeks the results haven’t been great for us and it’s frustrating and as a player it’s hard to deal with”, he said. “We are proud people, we are proud to play for Man United and when it’s not going right then it is hard to take”, Rooney told Sky Sports News.
Van Gaal has admitted that victory at Stoke on Boxing Day is now imperative.
“We need to get through this group of games coming up, the last few results haven’t been good enough”.
“We have focused ourselves to do that but Stoke have won also against Manchester City and [the Britannia Stadium is] a special ground. We have to be strong and get through it and get the results we need”, he added.

Criticism for United’s possession-based playing style has intensified over the past month, but Young is the latest player after Phil Jones and David de Gea who has spoken positively about the dressing room atmosphere. He said: “It is our game plan”.
