USA air strikes hit targets in Helmand

Sangin district has bounced in and out of Taliban control for some years, and fighting there has produced some of the highest casualty counts among Afghan and worldwide forces in 14 years of war. The troops were killed Monday when an attacker rammed an explosives-laden motorcycle into their patrol.
“US forces conducted two strikes in Sangin district, Helmand Province, December 23, against threats to the force”, US Army Colonel Michael Lawhorn said on Thursday.
However he said that they remained overstretched forces and needed additional global back-up, particularly close air support.
The battle continues between Afghan forces and the Taliban as the Afghan Taliban gain ground on Helmand Province.
Helmand abuts the Pakistani border, which makes it easy for the Taliban to resupply from its strongholds in Pakistan and maintain a steady stream of fighters. “These factors complicate the battle for Sangin”.
Fighting continued after insurgents captured the area around the district governor’s compound overnight but were pushed back, said police commander Akhtar Muhammad.
Sangin is a fertile region that is host to the Afghanistan’s poppy trade.
Afghan forces have been trying to recapture the area from the Taliban, who claim to control the district.
“Taliban rumors that they have captured the district are not true”, he said.
U.S. defence chiefs now admit the Afghan army is locked in a “tough fight” against a determined foe, supported within Pakistan and under new leadership since the death of Mullah Mohammed Omar.
A team of around 10 British soldiers has been deployed to Camp Shorabak in Helmand as part of a wider North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission to help local forces. The return of British troops is poignant, as they suffered more than 100 of their 456 fatalities during their 13-year Afghan combat mission in Sangin.
Another 300 British troops from the regular army have been sent to Camp Bastion in the south of Afghanistan, The Times revealed, as advisors to the undertrained and undersupplied Afghan army.
“It was significant because of the routes it controlled and it was a very significant part of the resourcing of the political economy of Helmand, because it is a major center of drugs processing and drugs shipping”, said Gordon.
But the Helmand Governor, Mirza Khan Rahimi, insisted the Sangin district “is completely under the control of the government security forces”.

Details of the grim conditions for government troops pinned down in central Sangin emerged on Wednesday night as the embattled security forces struggled to maintain their last foothold in the Helmand town which came to symbolise Britain’s bloody struggle in Afghanistan.
