US embassy in Beijing issues ‘threats against Westerners’ warning
December 24, 2015 Sinosphere By AUSTIN RAMZY Several foreign embassies in Beijing, together with the American & British ones, warned on Thurs. of attainable threats against Westerners in a shopping district on or around Christmas Day, urging their citizens to “exercise heightened vigilance”.

The French Embassy, Britain’s Foreign Office and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs issued similar warnings.
The warnings made mention of the upscale Beijing neighborhood of Sanlitun but were otherwise nonspecific.
Both governments said citizens should remain vigilant in the area of Sanlitun, which is a bar and shopping area in the capital Beijing.
Beijing police have tightened security around Sanlitun district on Thursday.
There are no further details from governmental agencies about the nature of the threat.
A woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight by a sword-wielding man there in August.
The city’s police confirmed a yellow alert was in place, added: “Beijing police are planning ahead and taking many measures… to ensure public order”.
Beijing police beefed up its presence at large and medium-sized malls but didn’t tie it to the warnings. The UK Embassy has issued the same guidance to British Government Staff.

The targeting of foreigners in China is rare, although attacks not unheard of; the Los Angeles Times notes that such a high profile threat against Westerners is likely a first for the city.
