Mahmood told the Guardian that no officials had told them why their entry was barred, but he thinks the reason is “obvious”. MP Stella Creasy has publicized the case saying she is “concerned about the incident happening against British Muslims”.

Other rebels said that Alloush’s assassination is a part of Russian goal in Syria to eliminate the alternative opposition to Assad.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights cites “leading sources” in Mr Alloush’s rebel group who say that that the commander was killed along with eight of his fellow fighters.

He said buses that were standing by to transfer the evacuees left empty and “the plan was on hold until Jaish al-Islam reorganizes itself”.

Tumah also said that while he still intends to attend the peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland, in January, Assad should not have any role in the future of Syria.

Alloush along with his brother was reported among those killed.

The Syrian state news agency, SANA, said Alloush had been killed in the eastern Ghouta region without attributing or claiming responsibility.

The death of Mr Alloush, if confirmed, could have significant repercussions on the grinding battles taking place just beyond government-held Damascus in suburbs controlled by rebel forces. The Syrian government has always said it will not negotiate with terrorists and considers the Army of Islam to be terrorists.

Zahran Alloush was previously known to have advocated the creation of an Islamic state before scaling back his rhetoric, and more recently he had been promoting a moderate strand of Islam. He has denied holding them, although they were abducted from an area under Army of Islam control.

Primarily because these groups are, while not as bad as ISIS, extremely violent and fanatical and in a more immediate position to directly threaten Assad.

Syrian rebels who spoke to BuzzFeed News said that Alloush’s killing will not stop their fight against the regime but it would only grow stronger.

Mazen al-Shami, an opposition activist based near Damascus, said Russian warplanes fired 10 missiles at the site where Allouch and top commanders in his group were meeting in Otaya.

“A number of members and leaders of the Army of Islam [Jaish al-Islam] were killed, but the fate of [their] commander, Zahran Allouch, is unknown”, the monitoring group said. He also praised countries that have taken in refugees.
