The US Embassy in Beijing issued a warning Thursday to Westerners in the Chinese capital of a possible terror threat against them on Christmas.

“The Danish Embassy in Beijing has received information on possible threats against Westerners in Sanlitun area in Beijing around December 25”. It is also the location of a number of foreign embassies, although some, including that of the United States, have moved farther from the city centre. “We do not have any additional information at this time”, stated Benjamin Weber, a spokesman for america Embassy.
Beijing is generally safe and criminals rarely target travellers, although the fashionable Sanlitun bar and restaurant district occasionally sees fights.
The Sanlitun area is home to big-name brand stores – including China’s first Apple store – along with trendy bars, restaurants and cafes and a busy nightlife.
The embassy has urged American nationals and government personnel in the area to exercise “heightened vigilance”. Meanwhile, Beijing police has also issued a “yellow” security alert, the second lowest level, for Christmas and New Year focused on busy shopping areas.
In August, a woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight by a sword-wielding man there.
Chinese police stepped up patrols in the district on Thursday following the warnings.
