PM Modi’s surprise visit welcomed by Pakistan Opposition parties
To a question, the Foreign Secretary said it was decided that Pak-Indian foreign secretaries would meet in mid-January in Islamabad to enhance the dialogue process.

The remarks come a day after Modi made a brief surprise visit to Lahore where he met Sharif and visited his residence in Raiwind Palace.
He, however, added that all seeds of such a relationship are laid in “silence” and adding that a number of meetings, including the NSA-level talks in Bangkok, Modi’s meeting with Sharif in Paris and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Pakistan helped create a conducive atmosphere.
Modi yesterday during his return from Kabul had a surprise stop-over at Lahore and went to the home of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Shairf on his birthday.
After a months of impasse, the situation between both the countries India and Pakistan seems like thaw.
Describing Mr Modis 150-minute sojourn yesterday in Lahore as “a diplomatic masterstroke”, Mahboob Mohsin of The Nation felt that the “hawks and naysayers on both sides of the border were trounced when Modi unexpectedly landed in Lahore to wish his counterpart on his 66th birthday”.
Modi, it said citing analysts, “appears willing to endure criticism from hard-liners within his own Bharatiya Janata Party who oppose outreach to Pakistan, which they accuse of harboring Islamist militant groups that have frequently attacked India”.
Modi reportedly told Sharif that it was important for the leadership of the two countries to understand each other’s position.
Attempting to dispel the notion that the visit was pre-planned, Chaudhry said that the Pakistani PM’s adviser on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz and National Security Adviser Nasir Janjua too would have attended the meeting if the Indian PM had informed about his visit earlier.
Geo TV reported that the visit “was not that surprising” as the Lahore Air Traffic Control had been told about it on Thursday. Both the Prime Ministers are expected to hold meeting now. Also present were Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and the Indian envoy, T C A Raghavan. “Backroom diplomacy has been continuing between India and Pakistan since 1977”, said Kalsra.
“I think it is going to play a significant role in improving ties between the two South Asian archrivals”, said Amanullah Memon, a professor of global relations at a private university in the capital, Islamabad.
Sirajul Haq, head of conservative Jamaat-i-Islami, said it was shocking that Mr. Modi was invited in Pakistan.
It was the first visit to Pakistan by an Indian premier in 12 years.

Sharif and his brother and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were among those who received Modi at the airport with bouquets. He was also seen urging the security agencies, immigration and Parliament to take note of the incident and nearly instigating them towards imposing sanctions.
