US Defense Chief Visits Iraq to Assess IS Fight
Islamic State militants on Wednesday attacked a training camp in Iraq for fighters battling the extremist group, killing three Iraqi Sunni fighters and wounding 10 people, including four of their Turkish trainers, officials said.

“An additional and extremely unsafe factor promoting global tensions is the unlawful presence of the Turkish armed forces on Iraqi territory near the city of Mosul, which arrived there without a request and approval of the legitimate government of Iraq”, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
A statement, issued by the office of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, said Abadi and Carter “discussed the war on terrorist Daaesh (IS group) gangs and the latest victories achieved on the enemy, in addition to tackling means to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the areas of arming and training”.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who met with Abadi on Wednesday in Baghdad, emerged from the meetings to say there was no agreement about accepting more U.S. help. After Carter announced the new special operations force, Shi’ite militias pledged to fight any such USA deployment.
The recent focus has been the battle in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, which IS militants took in May.
The German military says it’s flown its first mission in support of the coalition effort against the so-called Islamic State group in Syria. “Both he (Abadi) and I anticipate that those circumstances will arise as Iraqi forces move north to Mosul, and we’re prepared to increase our contribution”.
The sources said Carter will meet Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi and other officials to discuss the political and security situation in the region, especially the fight against Daesh.
But details of the plan have not been disclosed, and USA officials haven’t said when they may deploy to Iraq.
The U.S. has been supporting Iraqi forces with airstrikes since August of a year ago, but has so far ruled out sending ground troops.
The United States has said it is willing to deploy advisers and attack helicopters to help Iraq retake Ramadi, west of Baghdad.
“We are pleased to confirm that their condition is stable”, a Turkish official told AFP on condition of anonymity, emphasising that the attack originated from IS-held territory.

Carter’s trip had been planned for some time, but on Monday during a Pentagon visit, President Barack Obama vowed to accelerate the campaign against IS, lending more urgency to the visit.
