SC order on diesel SUVs, luxury cars in Delhi
The Supreme Court has banned the registration of new diesel-guzzling luxury cars and sports-utility vehicles (SUVs) with an engine capacity of over 2000cc in the National Capital Region until 31 March, as part of several measures to clean up Delhi’s toxic air quality.

The ban will apply on new vehicles that have 2.0-liters engines or bigger, and will be in force until March 31, 2016.
The apex court also ordered that all commercial vehicles, including trucks, which are not Delhi-bound, will not be allowed to enter the national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1.
The order is separate from an environmental court’s decision last week to halt the sale of new diesel-powered vehicles temporarily and comes as the Delhi state government prepares to restrict the number of cars on its roads next month on an experimental basis.
In addition, the court doubled a tax on commercial vehicles carrying goods into Delhi to about $20, for light-duty vehicles and two-axle trucks, and raised the tax to 2,600 rupees for larger trucks.
The Supreme Court’s rulings were widely welcomed by environmentalists, who said strong action was required as the city was choking with dense smog, caused by winter fog and dirty air. The court said its order overrides all the other orders passed by other forums, including the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The bench was hearing the pleas of auto dealers and the Centre not to ban diesel vehicles as the same will affect the supply of essential commodities. It all started with the declaration of Odd-Even Policy of Delhi Government in which only odd numbered cars will be allowed on roads on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and even numbered cars will be allowed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. For a day 1,400 diesel vehicles gets registered and 30 pct of these being strapped with engines of 2000 cc and above.
The bench, in one of its directions also made it clear that only CNG-run taxis would be permitted to ply in Delhi and NCR. In the poll, only 32% (3870 votes) respondents agreed with the question – Is it fair to single out diesel vehicles only for polluting Delhi?
