Howard said his church’s building had collapsed but no one was inside at the time.
“He and I just huddled together and saw trees fly past us, and a shipping container flip over”, Ables said.
The twister in Birmingham, Alabama, late on Friday afternoon damaged several homes, uprooted trees and caused a handful of minor injuries, police and weather officials reported.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said the victims were a 19-year-old woman and two 22-year-old men.
Meanwhile, two more deaths linked to weather were reported Saturday in MS, bringing that state’s death toll from severe weather over Christmas to 10. There have been more than 60 injuries attributed to the storms.
Gov. Phil Bryant declared a State of Emergency on Thursday for affected areas of the state.
Alabama was on alert Saturday for more extreme flooding, a day after a tornado touched down in Birmingham. No other details of damage were immediately available.
This weather system “has a history of producing heavy rain and flooding/flash flooding over much of the southeastern U.S., and the threat for excessive rainfall will persist”.
“It’s going to be a pretty active weekend as far as winter weather”, said Evan Duffey, meteorologist for AccuWeather.
Witnesses spotted the funnel outside the city about 5 p.m. on Friday. It’s part of the same cell that warranted an earlier tornado warning in Tuscaloosa County, southwest of the Jefferson.
The tornado damaged 403 homes over a seven-county area in the state, Flynn said.
But that didn’t stop some from spending their Christmas giving rather than receiving. Emergency officials transport James Simmons by boat because water over Byler Road prevented them from reaching him in Moulton, Ala., Friday, Dec. 25, 2015.
The worst of the storms may be over, but flooding continues to be an issue and there still may be some scattered thunderstorms in the area.
Among the dead were eight people from MS, including a seven-year-old boy who perished while riding in a auto that was swept up and tossed by storm winds.
A flood warning was also in effect for the Coosa River, swollen by up to 8 inches of rain over the past week. The area is about 40 miles east of Huntsville.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for three counties.
Other parts of the country face possible storms and blizzards Saturday.
Residents are advised to stay off the roads.

The governor’s office said in a statement that almost 200 roads in the state are closed due to flooding. Four people were rescued from submerged cars. Birmingham Mayor William Bell there were no reports of missing people, but the area was still searched. The agency says the deaths were weather-related. A Christmastime wave of severe weather continued Friday.
