Many demonstrators hope the ongoing protests might dampen retail sales in order to highlight what was seen by many as a tardy and still insufficient response from the city and police to McDonald’s death and to underscore broader accusations of police brutality.

People participate in what organizers are calling a “Black Christmas” protest on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago Thursday.
The mayor fired two city officials after a string of high-profile fatal police shootings that were caught on tape, but concealed from the public.
On Wednesday, protesters were arrested in Black Lives Matter demonstrations blocking roadways and highways near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport – resulting in closed stores, delayed flights and surreal images of riot police clogging escalators and entrances that said, “Welcome to Mall of America”.
The graphic nature of the video, in which Van Dyke is shown shooting McDonald not long after arriving on the scene, didn’t help, nor did the fact that this footage didn’t square with other officers’ accounts on the scene.
The release last month of police dashcam video showing the shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald has led to weeks of sporadic protests. One demonstrator held up a sign that read, “Shopping for a New Mayor”.
CHICAGO (CNN) – Demonstrators shut down this city’s so-called Magnificent Mile and entrances to several stores Thursday, disrupting last-minute holiday shopping and demanding the resignations of the mayor and prosecutor.
Most shoppers attributed the headache of being on Michigan Avenue on Thursday to their own failure to go shopping sooner, rather than the peaceful protest.
Police killings, especially of black people, have sparked protests in some US cities over the past year and a half. Van Dyke is now charged with first-degree murder.
Officers have already worn them in one North Side district. Mayor Emanuel says the cameras will help “build trust” in the police. The release of police dashcam video last month showing the shooting has set off weeks of protests. Emanuel and the department have faced heavy criticism over officers’ treatment of suspects, including the 2014 killing of a black teenager who was shot 16 times. One officer inquires about a stun-gun, which gives officers the option of using non-lethal force. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
