“It’s ungodly warm out there”, said Mike Reinhardt, owner of Locals Surf School.
Most of the shower activity is finished by noon, and some clearing takes place mainly to the north. Christmas Eve afternoon temperatures are record breaking, in the upper 60s to lower 70s! The maximum wind speed was estimated to be 70 miles per hour.
The official temperature for the region is recorded at the weather service station in North Charleston.
The forecast is calling for a daytime high of 8C and a low of 1C, a jump from an average high of 3C and low of -1C. The most snow already on the ground for Christmas Day was a whopping 14 inches in 1969. It was the warmest Christmas Eve in the history of New York City, where residents and tourists alike strolled the streets in shorts and T-shirts as temperatures hit 72 degrees. Burlington, Vermont, for example, recorded its highest temperature for any December on record Thursday with a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, one degree more than the records set in 1998 and 1941.
They say they didn’t expect to be jogging in such lightweight apparel on Christmas Eve, but plan to do it again on Christmas Day. As a matter of fact, our high on Saturday will break the old record high of 75 set back in 1889! It will be beautifully sunny over the next two days despite cooling down to a high of 7 C on Christmas Day.
Sunday: According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 40 percent chance of rain.
Why has it been so warm on the East Coast?
“We probably will see more of the same heading into next month”, Thompson said.
