Depending on whom you asked, the weather outside was either frightful or delightful.
The forecast is calling for a daytime high of 8C and a low of 1C, a jump from an average high of 3C and low of -1C. But not before temperatures possibly surge into the 70s again Sunday.
Not even overcast skies in Philadelphia on Thursday could dampen Michael Craven’s spirits. “I don’t have to go to Florida to be a winter bird”. I think people are in better spirits because it’s warm out. A cold front will approach late Wednesday. Please be careful if you’re hitting the roads today, and have a very Merry Christmas Eve! It was 70 degrees on Christmas Day in 1982, according to National Weather Service stats.
The weather forced some traditional winter destinations to improvise.
But what’s going on in the United States can’t be attributed to El Niño alone.
Dozens skated at the ice rink in Cincinnati’s Fountain Square, where the temperature was in the 50s. Some places in Western Washington had between one and two feet of snow on Christmas Day.
“It is safe to say Santa could wear Bermuda shorts this year”, wrote Stacie Hanes, a National Weather Service forecaster in Portland, Maine. It’s possible Monday will be our next First Alert weather day…stay tuned.
“I miss it because I like to snowboard and stuff”, said another.
A white Christmas is not out of the question for areas of the US West, Plains, and Upper Midwest. It is not out of the question that the record high for the month of December (72) will be challenged today.
“We’re still looking for fairly mild temperatures into next week”, Gill said. The average for December 24 in Toronto is -1 C.
New York City broke its record Friday for the warmest Christmas, continuing a trend expected to last through the holiday weekend.
“We’re living through history, and not of a good kind”, climate activist Bill McKibben told the New York Times this week.
The temperature is expected to reach 61 on Friday, too.
