Warm temperatures carrying into Christmas Day

It should be easy to go over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The weather service says over the past 115 years, there have been 54 – or 47 percent – official white Christmases in the Detroit area.

Temperatures will remain below normal throughout the region into next week.

The record high for Christmas Eve was already broken at midnight Thursday when the temperature topped 64 degrees. Many people are donning T-shirts instead of ugly Christmas sweaters, and lawn-mowers may even be rumbling instead of snow-blowers.

And a new storm is taking shape in the Plains, bringing colder temperatures with it. There could be snow and ice from the Texas Panhandle north to Kansas and Missouri. Twisters that dotted the landscape from MI to Arkansas on Wednesday continued Thursday, along with torrential rains and strong winds.

A weather station southwest of Montreal hit 70 degrees at 10 a.m Thursday; Bennington, Vt., reached 70 at 11 a.m.
