During the meeting, the two secretaries will discuss modalities and other schedule-related aspects to carry forward the dialogue which was announced during the visit of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Islamabad earlier this month. India accuses Pakistan-based militants for masterminding the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 dead.
Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Pakistan has to be taken forward and moved beyond “VIP diplomacy”, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Saturday.
Aides say the meeting was arranged directly between the two prime ministers on just a few hours’ notice when Modi called to wish 66-year-old Sharif a happy birthday.
“The challenge in India-Pakistan relations has always been to keep up the momentum of talks despite hiccups that are inevitable”, J. Jegannathan, professor of South Asian studies at the Central University of Jammu, told The Telegraph. The real decision-making is happening behind the scenes.
A second member of Sharif’s cabinet said the same of Modi.
“The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) still believes that one day these parts, which have for historical reasons separated only 60 years ago, will again, through popular goodwill, come together and Akhand Bharat will be created”, he said in an interview which was recorded before Modi’s Lahore visit.
Pakistan rejects the accusation but it has struggled to turn around perceptions in Afghanistan, where social media users sent out a stream of glowing commentary on Modi’s visit, contrasting the parliament building with the destruction wrought by Taliban suicide bombers.
“We must not forget this is the same month in which East Pakistan got separated from us and Modi admitted to have conspired that standing in Dhaka”, said Saeed.
The MoS also hit back at Congress for “useless criticism” over Modi’s visit to Pakistan.
Singh said that it was mainly due to Modi’s efforts that the influence and image of the country improved globally.
