First Full Moon On Christmas Since 1977
Today marked the first time a full moon has occurred on Christmas since 1977.

Central parts of the UK are experiencing heavy rain, and by nightfall, most of the UK will be covered by cloud – so blame the typical UK weather if you miss out on the rare full moon. From Dec. 17-22, the asteroid was flying in the space at a distance of 7.3 million miles or 12 million kilometers from Earth.
The other cool thing about this full moon is that the moon will be far to the north. This is because the earth’s axis is tilted to its orbit around the sun.
The full moon is pictured through Christmas lights decorations in Skopje, Macedonia, December 25, 2015. The last time this happened was in 1977, and we won’t see another celestial event like it until 2034.
Hope you enjoyed the display while it lasts.
I reached its peak just past 6:00 a.m. ET Friday morning.
Not since 1977 has a full moon dawned in the skies on Christmas.

A rare sight in the sky overhead this Christmas, and no, we’re not talking about Santa Claus.
