Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke Indicted on Murder Charges
MURDER/STRONG PROB KILL/INJURE WITH FIREARM: Van Dyke shot and killed McDonald without legal justification and while armed with a firearm, knowing that such an act created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to Laquan.

The Chicago Tribune reports Van Dyke has also been hit with a formal charge of misconduct after shooting 16 times at the 17-year-old victim when video seems to show he posed no direct threat to the officer or any of the other lawmen who had surrounded him. The Justice Department said it plans to investigation allegations of misconduct concerning the Chicago Police Department’s policies in the wake of the fallout from the video’s release, and protesters have called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel and State Attorney Anita Alvarez to be taken from office as well.
Cook County Circuit Judge James Brown set Van Dyke’s arraignment for December 29.
At a news conference Thursday, the retired officers joined the ranks of those who have been voicing distrust of leaders including Mayor Rahm Emanuel since last month’s release of the video of the McDonald shooting.
Van Dyke’s attorney said he didn’t think a special prosecutor was necessary but that if the venue is moved there might be a different prosecutor. Prosecutors say Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times as the teen walked away from police carrying a small knife.
The indictment against Van Dyke, 37, marked the first time a Chicago police officer has been charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality in almost 35 years. The mayor said last month after the video was released Van Dyke violated the professional standards of a police officer and the “basic moral standards” that hold the Chicago community together.
Protests were planned leading up to Van Dyke’s Friday hearing, as well, one of which was targeting travelers at Chicago’s Midway Airport, making holiday travel a bit more hard.
“We know that only boycotting works”, Willie J.R. Fleming of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign told WLS-TV, Chicago.

Members of the public shouted insults at Van Dyke as he left the courthouse on Friday. RETIRED POLICE CALL FOR CHANGERetired police officers are calling on the US Department of Justice to “use our experience, our skills of many years working within the Chicago Police Department” to overhaul the system.
