On their final possession, the Hurricanes (8-5) were driving and opted to go with a halfback pass. Only, instead of capitalizing on the trick play, the Hurricanes turned the ball over when Joe Yearby’s wobbly throw was intercepted off by Washington State’s Shalom Luani with about three minutes left. Two players later, Washington State’s Marcellus Pippins recovered Walton’s fumble at the 5 to end the threat.

Luke Falk passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the Cougar defense that rose up and won the game with two takeaways during the final five minutes.

Washington States Jamal Morrow (25) heads to the end zone for a touchdown despite the efforts of Miami’s Corn Elder, center, and Juwon Young during the first quarter of the Sun Bowl. Then the Cougars took it away in the second, limiting UM to minus-13 rushing yards and just 21 total yards in 13 plays.

Longtime Georgia coach Mark Richt, a former Miami quarterback, was hired in late November and is tasked with restoring the program to its former glory after a decade of mediocrity.

Of the team’s second-half struggles on offense, Marks said, “We allowed the weather to affect us more than we should have”.

The Hurricanes faced three offenses ranked in the top 20 in FBS, and every one of them teed off on Miami’s defense in cruising to wins.

The Cougars do best when the passing game gets going, a trademark of Mike Leach run teams and as a result, leads the country in passing offense (397.0) and red zone offense (94.3%).

Kaaya finished the game with 219 yards, 17 for 31 (completions), a touchdown and an interception (that wasn’t his fault). Berrios sparked the fourth-quarter rally with a 60-yard run that set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Mark Walton. “At the end of the day, we didn’t make enough plays late in the second half”.

Washington State’s road has been different.

First, Miami saw a promising drive end when Kaaya was intercepted in the end zone – on a pass that Rashawn Scott seemed to have caught before the ball was punched out of his arms by Washington State’s Charleston White.

Cougar RBs combine to average 148.8 all-purpose yards-per-game, 6.1 yds-per-carry and have scored 11 TDs.

The Hurricanes have not won a bowl game since 2006.

Nick Smith had three field goals for Marshall (10-3), including a 32-yarder with 1:44 to play that was part of a 13-play, 80-yard march that lasted 6:35. Scott overcame adversity and led all Miami receivers in yards with 75-yards. They stuffed Miami on the next drive, forcing a turnover on downs, and Falk and the offense went back to work.
