Furious wildfire forces California evacuations, highway closures

The fire spread to more than 1,200 acres and was about 10 percent contained Saturday morning, said Tom Kruschke, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

The Ventura County Star reported that shortly after 1 a.m. the fire had reached the tunnels at State Beaches, off the 101 Freeway just north of Ventura.

Fire officials said they hoped to re-open 101 and a parallel train track Saturday afternoon, but cautioned that it could be early next week before they get the blaze fully under control.

All mandatory evacuations were lifted at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service predicted sustained winds over 60 miles per hour in Ventura County for Saturday evening.

Firefighters battling the flames included crews, choppers and fixed-wing aircraft from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, with help from Cal Fire and the Orange County Fire Authority, which sent a Type 3 Strike Team of five brush engines with 19 firefighters.

“When we arrived, we had the fire immediately impinging on the 101 and we had multiple motorists stranded”, Burris said.

Similar conditions should prevail into Sunday, at which point a wind advisory should still be in effect. “The fire’s receptive to spotting and we’re not out of the woods yet”.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
