Backup QB Osweiler ‘felt the pressure’
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, with two straight days of practice this week, continues to make progress after missing four games due to a foot injury.

“He came in [Friday] morning and was a little sore, so we just said, ‘OK, we’ll stop for the weekend and go from there, ‘” Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said after practice Friday.
On Monday, Kubiak hinted at his plans for his QBs, but said he wasn’t prepared to say if Manning could return to practice or whether Osweiler would start against the Steelers (8-5).
Shortly thereafter, it was reported that Manning had partially torn his plantar fascia and the Broncos named Osweiler the starter for the foreseeable future.
Peyton Manning took part in some 7-on-7 work and threw with the scout team in his first practice in over a month.
Manning was not going to play on Sunday in the Broncos’ Week 15 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Broncos did not expect Manning being unable to go in Friday’s practice. “We gave him the weekend off, so we’ll see where we’re at”, Kubiak said of Manning. “… We’re a football team and we go about our day that way all the time”. The Broncos are 3-1 in games started by Osweiler, but he’s stalled at bit over the last two games.
“Every time we put the defense in a bad situation, I know I didn’t hear those guys saying anything negative on the way out”, Green said.
For now though, it sounds like Osweiler has the early edge to be this week’s starter, but only because he’s been the starter for the past four weeks. Osweiler lost for the first time last week, 15-12 against Oakland, and was sacked five times.
In an interview on December 2, the Broncos quarterback was evasive when asked about when exactly his injury occurred, calling timelines “irrelevant”.
Last week, Manning did a half hour of throwing and some drill work apart from the rest of the team. Manning will not dress at Pittsburgh on Sunday and Trevor Siemian will remain as Osweiler’s backup. But what if Osweiler struggles and the Broncos lose?
There was also another familiar face back on the field at practice Wednesday. If Manning has been in serious pain for months now, and Archie’s comments seem to insinuate that he has, then maybe he’s been playing the game, mentally, different, too.
