Residents of bushfire-affected areas along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road are going home to inspect the devastation after a Christmas Day fire destroyed 116 homes.

Surf Coast shire councillor Clive Goldsworthy said the Spirit Foundation was set up in 2013 to help locals in need, and it was being used to help out after the fires.
“They walked away from the fire that had every potential to be a killer”, he said at a joint press conference with Andrews.
Evacuation sirens sounded in towns along the road, a major tourist attraction southwest of Melbourne, as the normally packed route was closed and residents moved to hastily organized evacuation centers nearby.
The main firefront had not gone through Kennet River, but firefighters defending homes there had put out spot fires and no properties had been reported burnt.
“It’s been an exceptionally dry year with the El Nino event, and the worst fire conditions will probably be seen in January and February, and that’s why we’re working really hard to consolidate this fire now”. “Everything’s available to burn”.
One lucky koala has escaped the bushfire raging at Wye River along the Great Ocean Road, as wildlife rescuers remain on standby for an influx of animals from the Victorian bushfires.
“I can confirm that 35 houses are gone in Wye River, 18 are gone in Separation Creek”, Victoria State Premier Daniel Andrews said, adding that the fire stopped just 500 metres short of another town.
A lot of compelled to leave their houses needed to spend Christmas night in hurriedly-ordered shelters.
The fires started with a lightning strike on December 19 and have already burned more than 2,000 hectares (20 square kms/4,940 acres).
The catastrophe is the newest of a string of bushfires to hit Victoria and different states in current weeks.
