No Indictment in Jail Death of Sandra Bland, Arrest Charges Not Decided
A grand jury chose not to indict anyone for the death of Sandra Bland.

A day after Sandra Bland’s family blasted a Texas grand jury that later declined to bring charges in the Naperville woman’s death in a rural jail, a special prosecutor who investigated the case offered to answer any questions they have. The grand jury will return in January to consider that issue.
A dash cam video of the July 10 arrest fueled suspicions that Bland was mistreated. Authorities contend the stop became confrontational and a video of her arrest shows a state trooper kneeling on top of her as she is facedown on the ground.
Bland, an African American female, was found hanging in a jail cell by a plastic bag on Monday, July 13, 2015.
Bland’s relatives, along with supporters fueled by social media postings, questioned a medical examiner’s finding that Bland killed herself.
A lawyer for the Bland family, Cannon Lambert, said it isn’t clear what Jordan means by this.
“We have asked before to speak with them, and will ask again”, he said.
“I simply can’t have faith in a system that’s not inclusive of my family”, said Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, surrounded by her four daughters.
Sandra Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, said she wants to see all the evidence and is frustrated by delays in the case.
Waller County denies any wrongdoing, saying Bland did not say she was having suicidal thoughts at the time of her two screenings, throughout the booking process or while detained. County officials said they themselves received death threats. According to the lawsuit, sheriffs deputies and guards failed to monitor and protect Bland while she was in police custody.
A panel of five special prosecutors presented evidence and information to the grand jury on Monday.
Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, has called her death “heartbreaking” and said it is an example of how the country must face “hard truths about race”.
“There are other issues the grand jury is still considering”, Jordan added, emphasizing that charges could still be pressed against the trooper who pulled Bland over. Indicting an officer is generally a rare act, but Bowling Green State University professor Philip Stinson, who receives federal funding to track police violence and arrests, told the Des Moines Register past year that there is no government or scholarly database that tracks the outcome of grand jury proceedings involving officers.

Authorities said it was suicide, but Bland’s family insist that could not have been the case. “I can’t begin to tell you what’s going on, because I don’t known what’s going on”.
