Putin praises ‘privileged partnership’ with India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin, the 16th in the series of annual summits between India and Russian Federation, is arguably of greater geopolitical significance than any before it. Though the public takeaways from this summit have to do with defence and economic cooperation, the most important conversations will have taken place behind closed doors.

Amid huge “Modi-Modi” chants clubbed with a grand felicitation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the Indian community in Moscow while making a strong pitch for India-Russia ties which according to him go beyond politics, diplomacy, trade & commerce and stated that Russia has always stood beside his country as a “friend”.
It is expected that both countries will seal a number of defence deals as well.
Rosaton, a Russian Nuclear Energy Corporation, will work for localisation of manufacturing in India for Russian-designed Nuclear Reactor Units.
Russian business daily Kommersant said this week that Putin’s one-on-one talks with Modi would decide the fate of the deal as the two still needed to sort out pricing disagreements.
Modi on Friday night reached Delhi from Lahore after his surprise visit to greet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on his birthday. The one unique historical cooperation between Russian Federation and India is BrahMos, a world-class supersonic cruise missile.
“With President Putin’s support, we are enlarging Indian investments in Russian hydrocarbon sector”.
“The pace of our cooperation in nuclear energy is increasing”, he said.
The Joint Statement said the two countries vowed to increase annual bilateral trade and investment and emphasized the need for continued facilitation by both the governments as well as speedy implementation of decisions and liberalization of relevant rules and regulations.
The prime minister’s itinerary includes a visit to Russia’s National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC) in Moscow.
He also voiced his appreciation for the strong India-Russia partnership in defence, diplomacy and development. Putin said Russia”s state-controlled diamond corportation Alrosa, which produces 27 percent of all diamonds in the world, would team with India which makes 65 percent of the world”s cut diamonds”.
The 90 minute- long interaction, where finance minister Arun Jaitley was conspicuous by his absence, also saw Prime Minister calling upon the attendees to spread awareness about the disruptive tactics of opposition as well as to come up with innovative ideas for the forthcoming budget.
Putin also gifted Modi a late-18th century Indian sword from the Bengal province that features intricate silver artwork.
