Jason Van Dyke Court Hearing Scheduled Amid Chicago Protests
Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to sit down with federal investigators Thursday on the second day of the Justice Department’s investigation of the Chicago Police Department.

Van Dyke was indicted by a grand jury earlier this week. Their investigation will focus on CPD patterns and practices following the release of dash-cam video showing a Chicago police officer shooting Laquan McDonald, 17.
The brief hearing marked Van Dyke’s first public appearance since he posted the required 10 percent of a $1.5 million bond and was freed from Cook County Jail last month. The latest indictment accuses the cop of killing Laquan “without lawful justification” while being aware his actions “created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm; the misconduct charge alleges Officer Van Dyke acted outside of his official capacity as an officer of the law”.
Given that it’s rare for Cook County prosecutors to charge officers in shooting cases, Cross’ attorney Tony Thedford said that Cross, while hopeful for justice, would be a “fool” to be optimistic. He has been indicted by a grand jury on six counts of first-degree murder and one charge of misconduct.
A small crowd of people followed Van Dyke out of the courthouse Friday shouting “16 times and a cover up”, local media reported.
The seven-count indictment against Van Dyke came as no surprise to his attorney, Daniel Herbert, who said he’s still weighing whether to request a change of venue based on the massive amount of pretrial publicity, much of which he believes has come from City Hall.
A handful of protesters swarmed Van Dyke as he exited the Leighton Criminal Court Building, repeatedly chanting, “16 times and a cover-up” for the number of shots that struck and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. His defense has previously said Van Dyke feared for his life as McDonald reportedly had a knife.
On Wednesday, the team introduced itself to the Chicago Police Department.
“There needs to be accountability for the injustices happening throughout the Chicago Police Department and our justice system”, said Maria Moser, a resident of the south-side suburb of Beverly, who attended the march with her brother.

Similar complaints have been raised for years but Wooten says he and others believe now is the time to affect change while the federal Department of Justice is investigating Chicago Police.
