For Beamer’s last game, Hokies offense parties like it’s 1993
The Hokies” final touchdown during that stunning run came on a 67-yard punt return by Greg Stroman – which was fitting considering the phrase “Beamer Ball’ became common during the coach’s long tenure because of Virginia Tech’s reputation for game-changing special teams plays. “Again, I appreciate the way we hung in there and battled and found a way to win”.

“We haven’t been in many games like this”, Beamer said of the high-scoring bowl game that saw the two teams combine for 107 points, 1,161 total yards and 57 first downs. His first bowl game was the 1993 Independence Bowl when the Hokies defeated IN 45-20.
BIGGEST DOGS OF THE BOWL SEASON: Virginia Tech enters Saturday’s game as a 14-point favorite, the largest spread of the 40 bowl games prior to the national title game. “If we had a few more ticks on the clock, maybe it changes it a little bit”.
On the opening drive of the second half, the Hokies went 81 yards in 15 plays, scoring on a 1-yard run by Trey Edmunds with 7:38 left in the third quarter. It was exciting. The first time I came to Shreveport, I left a happy guy. “We scored a lot of points, and usually when that happens we’ve got the game pretty well tied up”. “These are two great players for us [Brewer and Ford], but two great people”.
Of course, that was a better showing for Tulsa than its 66-42 loss to Memphis later that month, or in its 44-21 loss to Navy in its second-to-last game of the season. The teams also combined for a record 947 total offensive yards, topping the previous record of 912 set by SC and Missouri in 2005.
But the 69-year-old coach wasn’t complaining, only laughing and smiling in the aftermath of Virginia Tech’s 55-52 victory over Tulsa in the Independence Bowl on Saturday night.
What Else? – Virginia Tech QB Michael Brewer completed 23-of-37 passes for 344 yards and a score with a pick. The drive was capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Trey Edmunds, extending the lead to a comfortable 52-31. J.C. Coleman added 78 yards on eight carries. The 598 yards were the most by a Virginia Tech team since October 2010. He also rushed for a touchdown.
WASHINGTON STATE 20, MIAMI 14: Luke Falk threw two touchdown passes to lead Washington State (9-4) over Miami (8-5) in a snowy game at El Paso, Texas.

NO. 1 IN THE NATION?: Tulsa wide receiver Keyarris Garrett needs just 94 yards to supplant Roger Lewis of Bowling Green as the nation’s No. 1 receiver. On his first carry, he went 51 yards untouched up the left sideline for a touchdown to knot the score at 7 just over two minutes into the game. Quarterback Thomas Sirk accounted for 318 yards and three touchdowns before getting hurt in overtime.
