‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Breaks Records on Opening Weekend

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” became the biggest opening in movie history bringing in an estimated $238 million in the USA this weekend.
J.J. Abrams’ movie took £25.3 million ($37.7 million) in three days at the United Kingdom and Ireland box office, with Sunday’s projected £7.5 million ($11.2 million) bringing the film’s cumulative weekend projection to £32.8 million ($48.9 million), including previews. By weekend’s end, The Force Awakens could soar past $245 million to lock down the biggest opening weekend ever, toppling the previous champ, Jurassic World’s $208 million opening, The Hollywood Reporter writes. The record holder for the biggest opening during the month was “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which took in $85 million in domestic receipts in 2012. “The Force Awakens” opens in China on January 9.
Among records shattered by the film were single-day sales, which had never before topped $100 million.
Also debuting at the box office in the top ten this weekend were four other films, whose numbers seemed miniscule compared to the “Star Wars” hauling. The Universal dinosaur epic had the advantage of a summer release date as well as opening in China day-and-date with the rest of the world.
The big question on everyone’s mind is if Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be able to break the all-time global box office record of $2.788 billion Dollars established by James Cameron’s blockbuster movie Avatar in 2009?
Biggest December debut (nearly 3 times previous record of $84.6M).
Strong reviews for the film, which is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, have added to the fervour for The Force Awakens.
The movie itself was well received with a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Friday’s $120.5 million gate blasted that record into hyperspace.
