Hoping for people’s support on the issue of increasing vehicular pollution, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday unravelled his government’s plan to restrict movement of vehicles on Delhi roads for a fortnight starting January 1.

According to this rule, odd numbered cars will travel on odd dates of the month and even numbered on even dates of the month.

Come January 1, from 8am to 8pm on all days except Sunday, vehicles with number plates ending in an odd digit would be allowed to ply only on odd calendar dates.

The Odd-Even formula which has been criticized by the experts from the beginning has a list of exemptions which is longer than the rule. If the people accept this plan, we will think about having a permanent solution. It is just a token effort.

“Moreover, even the vehicles entering Delhi from outside the city will be affected”.

Seeking assistance for the success of the odd-even formula from Delhiites, Kejriwal said, “Government can take up an initiative but everyone needs to participate in Delhi to make those initiatives successful”.

The three-time chief minister noted that the ruling AAP government should have thought through the plan rather than implementing half-baked ideas.

The AAP ran a campaign “Muffler Man Returns” during the Delhi Assembly polls because of his trademark muffler he wraps his neck due to cough problem.

The Delhi government plans to run 6,000 additional buses to accommodate commuters after the implementation of the odd-even scheme.

The chief minister admitted that the public transport was not adequate to cope with the numbers who would have to leave their cars behind and urged motorists to go for auto pooling. “We will do an assessment at the end of 15 days”, he said.
