A Chinese coastguard vessel with what appeared to be gun turrets entered territorial waters claimed by Japan in the East China Sea, Japan’s coastguard said on Saturday, adding that it was the first such incursion by an armed Chinese vessel in the disputed area.

According to Kyodo News, when the Japanese coast guard asked the Chinese ships to leave its territorial waters Saturday, the Chinese responded by saying that the Japanese vessel was in Chinese waters and should leave immediately.
According to a statement emailed to Bloomberg, three vessels approached waters north of Kuba Island from around 8:19 a.m. local time, entering Japanese territorial waters at 9:30 a.m. and leaving just over an hour later. The armed ship additionally was seen Tues., still Japan stated it did not infiltrate Japanese waters at the time.
The entry of the three ships on Saturday was the 35th such incursion this year and the 139th time that Chinese government vessels have entered Japan’s waters since September 2012 said one government source. The ship is armed with an auto-cannon, although the main armament has been removed, the official said.
Beijing also claims the South China Sea nearly in its entirety and is involved in a series of disputes with several neighboring countries over the issue.
The incident took place as Tokyo confirmed that the Chinese authorities had arrested a third Japanese citizen and detained another on suspicion of spying.
China and Japan have conflicting claims to the uninhabited islands, which are controlled by Tokyo despite China and Taiwan each claiming the territory as its own.
Japan’s defense spending under the fiscal 2016 state budget, adopted Thursday, rose above 5 trillion yen for the first time, boosted by outlays to strengthen the defense of remote islands in response to China’s maritime expansion, according to Jiji Press.

Japan also sent two boats to Vietnam to be used as patrol vessels amid reported demonstrations of force by China in the sea.
