Christmas Day to see first full moon for 38 years
And then, for the first time in 38 years, the last full moon of the year will fall on Christmas.

The moon reached its peak size at 6:11 a.m. ET.
According to NASA December’s full moon is called the Full Cold moon because it occurs during winter. NASA says there will be a rare Christmas full moon.
Santa and his reindeer had some extra light by which to navigate the sky this Christmas morning.
It’s also sometimes called the “Full Oak Moon” – a name which dates from ancient pagan ceremonies which focused on the spiritual significance of the oak tree, and took place at the time of the December full moon. But this year, a bright full moon will be an added gift for the holidays. Last one was 1977, & there won’t be one again until 2034.
The good thing is the fact that the sky is expected to remain clear in much of North America including the United States and Canada and if you are interested to witness the moon in its full glory you will not be disappointed. You don’t want to miss out on seeing either of these events – we won’t see Asteroid 2003 SD220 around these parts again till 2018, and we have an even longer wait for the Moon and Christmas to line up again.
“Cold” is a relative term this year.
NASA has a spacecraft now orbiting the Earth’s moon.
