Disney and Lucasfilm have plenty to celebrate after Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered numerous records around the world in its box-office debut this weekend, ushering in a new era for the marquee franchise.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens posted the highest Thursday preview gross ($57 million), the highest single-day and Friday gross ($120.5 million), and it is the first film to surpass $100 million in a single day. The seventh movie in the celebrated sci-fi franchise is projected to sell close to $220 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada through Sunday, beating the record $208.8 million for “Jurassic World” in June, Disney said.
The film began its worldwide rollout on Wednesday and has grossed an additional $130 million internationally so far, bringing its global cumulative box office to $250 million.
As for biggest global opening of all-time, Jurassic World also holds that record with $524.9 million.
Such a positive reaction for “The Force Awakens” may attract the kind of repeat viewings that made James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Titanic” the highest grossing films of all time. The Force Awakens doesn’t open up in China, which is the second-largest moviegoing market in the world, until January 9. Disney has spent $25.5 million on 24 different TV spots in the US, according to iSpot.tv. The movie set opening-day records in Australia, Brazil, Britain, France, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and other countries.

The Force Awakens picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from The Return Of The Jedi, the last episode of the original trilogy. That was a significant hurdle for “Star Wars” to overcome.
