In his final game as Hokies Head Coach…Frank Beamer went out as a victor as Virginia Tech beat Tulsa 55-52 to win the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA.

The Hokies’ final touchdown during that stunning run came on a 67-yard punt return by Greg Stroman – which was fitting considering the phrase “Beamer Ball” became common during the coach’s long tenure because of Virginia Tech’s reputation for game-changing special teams plays. Virginia Tech was on pace to score 90 points at halftime, as they headed into the locker room up 45-31, looking like they’d take care of business and easily cover the 14 point spread, sending Frank Beamer off with a win in his last game.
Virginia Tech led by as many as 24 points in the second quarter. “But I’m proud of our football team”. Davis” “99 season also featured a share of the single-season school-record for touchdown catches with nine, which Antonio Freeman also had in the ’93 season – all until Ford came long. As one of the most underrated coaches in the nation, it is easy for Saint Joe’s and Martelli to not receive some of the recognition that they deserve. “I’m glad I finally got one for him”. “DeAndre recognized that and actually came during a timeout and said, ‘we can run we would like to play like that pace, but we thought we were at a disadvantage in terms of a speed game'”. The 107 points were an Independence Bowl record.
Tulsa hung around in the second half and eventually closed with-in 3, almost erasing a huge deficit thanks in part to 2 second half turnovers by the Hokies. The shootout continued throughout the first half, and the Hokies pulled away to a 55-37 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Hokies were up 52-31 when Brewer was picked. It was a record-setting contest that started with fireworks – in the form of four touchdowns in the first four minutes – before ending with Virginia Tech’s defense stepping up in the final moments, sacking Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans twice on the Golden Hurricane’s final possession. The Hokies entered the game ranked 98 in yards per play, but they were able to take advantage of a flawed Tulsa defense, racking up 598 total yards and 30 first downs. Michael Brewer completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,359 yards and 12 touchdowns against six interceptions.
“It’s pretty special”, Brewer said, tears in his eyes, of quarterbacking Beamer’s final game.
But Tulsa’s last gasp drive ended on Nicolas’ sack.
Marshall is 4-0 in bowl games under Coach Doc Holliday, including a 20-10 victory over Florida International in the 2011 St. Petersburg Bowl. On the ground, Travon McMillan rushed for 960 yards and five touchdowns.
He’s the same guy who before the first practice of his freshman season set a goal to have 10 touchdown catches in his first season. “I never got that trophy they said I was going to get”, Garrett said. “We knew he was going to have a big night”.

Naturally, Beamer got an ice bath in celebration of the win.
