Floods, tornadoes tear through South

The National Weather Service rated two rivers in the state as “major” flooding warnings late Friday evening while a “moderate” warning was given to two others and numerous more rated as “minor”.

Birmingham’s city government said earlier that several structures had been destroyed and that first responders were working to rescue people from the debris. According to Lt. Sean Edwards, a Birmingham police spokesman, there are no known injuries at this point.
A separate tornado spawned by the massive storm system that swept across much of the state Friday later hit in a neighborhood in southwest Birmingham.
Damage assessment teams from the National Weather Service spent the day investigating violent Christmas night weather in Central Alabama.

Residents are advised to stay off the roads. The Alabama EMA also warned that bridges, along with the roads, would be impassable to the the flooding.
Eighteen people have been killed and around 60 more injured in storms in USA states of Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Alabama, AP reported on Sunday.
Three other people died in Collin County, about 45 miles northeast of Dallas, according to sheriff’s deputy Chris Havey, although the circumstances were not immediately clear.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said 56 injuries were reported.
“You kind of stop and realize what Christmas is all about”, Perkins said.
