11 p.m. EST- Texas authorities confirmed that two people died when a gas station in Copeville was destroyed in one of the storms that barreled through the state Saturday evening, NBC 5 Dallas Fort-Worth reported.
An outbreak of severe weather, including tornadoes, in the Dallas area claimed the lives of almost a dozen people late on Saturday as a powerful winter storm hit the south-central United States.
A Garland police spokesman said there are no active rescues underway, but first responders are searching damaged homes for anyone that might be trapped.
Early EMA damage reports showed 241 homes destroyed or with major damage, and more than 400 total homes affected. And late Saturday, one death was reported in Alabama.
People run as weather sirens sound as a severe storm passes over downtown Dallas, Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, in Dallas.
The Red Cross said it was setting up shelters for people whose homes were damaged by the storm.
Local TV showed homes with roofs blown away, vehicles mangled or turned upside down, a severely damaged church, fallen trees and debris strewn across neighbourhoods.
The agency also said the damage left behind in nearby Rowlett was from at least an EF-3 tornado with winds between 136 and 155 miles per hour. Tornadoes were possible and residents were being asked to remain alert.
The rare December twisters that flattened houses and caused chaos on highways raised the death toll from days of deadly weather across the South to at least 28.
The flooding is the result of heavy downpours that have thrashed the southeastern USA since Wednesday, bringing record rainfalls.
The tornados snapped power cables and knocked over pylons, leaving some 30,000 Garland residents in the dark, the city said.
Rowlett City Manager Brian Funderburk says 23 people were injured and “huge amounts of damage” from a tornado is widespread but concentrated in southern part of the city.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn confirms two bodies were found Saturday morning in Benton County.
Severe weather could hit Texas again today as there was a risk of risky storms, including a likely strong tornadic episode in the eastern part of the state as well as western Louisiana. Chandler reported from Montgomery.
