California wildfire closes freeway for a while, forces evacuations
Fire officials had earlier reported that parts of the Pacific Coast Highway also were closed, but a fire department spokeswoman said that only a portion that overlaps 101 was closed.

By Saturday firefighters had gained the upper hand on the blaze that forced the closure of parts of a major highway and led to evacuations of homes and businesses.
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, fire officials said.
Highway 101 – which runs north to south – was closed in both directions for roughly 15 miles from state Highway 150 to state Highway 33, forcing holiday travelers to take narrow, backcountry roads.
Fire officials do not know the cause of the fire, Lindbery said. About 60 homes in Solimar Beach were under mandatory evacuation orders.
About 600 area firefighters are battling the blaze and are being assisted by at least two water-dropping helicopters. Spokesman Tom Kruschke says a downed power line on private property caused the fire, which has spread to 1,250 acres. “Vehicles caught in the fire were making u-turns and driving toward other motorists who were unaware of the problem”, according to Ventura County Battalion Chief Fred Burris, who recounted the initial chaos when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Huge flames light up the coast line from the Solimar brush fire that started in Ventura County, California.
Weather conditions are expected to improve over the next several days which should help firefighters increase the containment of the Solimar Fire.
The fire was just 10 percent contained as of late this morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

KTLA 5 reports that evacuees were asked to travel north to avoid firefighter operations to a shelter in Carpenteria set up by the Red Cross at the Veterans Memorial Building at 941 Walnut Avenue. However, no homes burned and the evacuations were lifted by nightfall. “That’s been one of the priorities – to make sure the highway gets opened up”. “We don’t want that to happen”.
