Downton went head-to-head with an hour-long special of EastEnders in the 8.45pm slot but even a shock vehicle crash involving the Mitchell and Beale families only captured the attention of 5.7 million fans.
Tom Branson (Allen Leech) says: “I hate goodbyes”.
They want Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) to finally marry fiancé Bertie Pelham.
She spoke of finding hope in a year of “darkness” and reflected on a year that endured terror atrocities including the murder of 38 people at a Tunisian beach resort in June and last month’s Paris attacks that left 130 dead.
And what will Lady Mary be wearing?
Executive producer Gareth Neame said the ITV show didn’t return for another season because dame Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Dowager Countess Lady Violet Crawley, wouldn’t be starring in it. “It’s lovely meeting people who have taken so much pleasure from the show”, their pilgrimage expected to last well after the credits roll tomorrow. (Downton ultimately) had a better shot in January than October (on PBS) but I don’t think it’s realistic where we are now.
After a lengthy struggle coming to terms with his sexuality, the under-butler will be waving goodbye to Downton Abbey and onto pastures new.
“I arrived here as a boy, I leave as a man”, he tells those assembled, as George begs him to stay.
“We’re more than likely not going to be part of something as big ever again in our lives and that resonates, it really does”, he explained.
The first Downton Abbey Christmas special in 2011 drew an average United Kingdom overnight audience of 8.6 million and a peak audience of 9.1 million, which rose to 12.1 million in the consolidated viewer figures, followed by 6.8 million in 2012 and 6.6 million in 2013.

A dark cloud will hover over Downton in the two-hour episode as two cast members will be told grim health news.
