According to Variety, “The Force Awakens” has grossed $544.6 million in the USA and almost $1.1 billion worldwide. The Force Awakens’ global success is especially impressive considering that most of the records it’s breaking belong to Jurassic World, which had the added bonus of opening the same day in China.

It was a highly competitive weekend, with movies ranging from Jennifer Lawrence’s “Joy”, which opened at $17.5 million, to Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”, taking on $4.5 million in 100 theaters. The $60 million Fox dramedy, earning a B+ CinemaScore, is among a handful of awards contenders that waited until the year-end holidays to open.

Fourth is the comedy “Sisters”, which made $13.9 million in its second weekend. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip also saw a miniscule drop in its second weekend, falling about 11 percent for an estimated $12.7 million.

The film earned $153 million this weekend, according to The Wrap.

Another is Sony and Village Roadshow’s Concussion, starring Will Smith. It opened in 2,841 locations.

Point Break has already opened in China, where it has grossed $40 million to date, and several other smaller Asian markets for a foreign cume so far north of $43 million.

Paramount’s “The Big Short” expanded from eight theaters to 1,585 locations on Wednesday, picking up $14.5 million for the five day period.
