Afghanistan: ‘Dozens of Taliban killed’ in battle for Sangin
Monday’s attack came as Taliban fighters and government forces battled for control of a strategic district in the southern province of Helmand after it was overrun by insurgents, delivering a serious blow to the government’s thinly spread and exhausted forces.

The Afghan Interior Ministry continued to deny reports that the Taliban had full control over the district, and claimed to have killed 50 fighters, along with a local Taliban commander, were killed in heavy fighting today.
The announcement in July that the Taliban founder and leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, had been dead for more than two years saw the group pull out of a dialogue process after only one meeting in Pakistan. Gen. William Shoffner, head of public affairs at NATO’s Resolute Support base in the Afghan capital Kabul, said in a statement.
“U.S. forces conducted two strikes in Sangin district, Helmand Province, December 23, against threats to the force”, U.S. Army Colonel Michael Lawhorn said.
A small contingent of British troops was sent to Helmand last weekend to provide support to embattled Afghan forces in the province.
Akhtar Muhammad, a police commander in Sangin district, said fighting was continuing after insurgents captured the area around the district governor’s compound overnight but were pushed back.
Russia, meanwhile, has said it is ready to supply arms to Afghanistan.
“These personnel are part of a larger North Atlantic Treaty Organisation team, which is providing advice to the Afghan National Army”. He said 12 members of the same family were killed by a roadside bomb as they were driving out of the district earlier this week, and rocket fire had landed on a house killing 17 people, including 10 children.
President Ghani further added that the policy of the Afghan government is clear and reiterated his last year’s remarks, saying that Afghanistan is engaged in an undeclared war with Pakistan during the past 14 years.
“An hour later we recaptured that building and now we have it”, he said.
Sangin is an important prize for the Taliban.
In addition, nine Taliban men were killed and another wounded with a final survivor still resisting security forces, the ministry said.
The town has become a major centre for the Taliban’s insurgency, as it is links Lashkah Gah, the capital of Helmand, to the province’s northern districts.
“This is probably the worst of the scenarios that the British had in 2013 and 2014”.
David Sedney, a foreign policy analyst at the Wilson Center in Washington D.C, said that the Afghan army is showing its weakness.

“The problem is where the Afghan forces have to fend for themselves”, he said. “But it’s when they’re left to their own devices that they seem to struggle”.
