New ‘Star Wars’ film hits $1 bn at box office: Disney
But analysts say powerhouse attractions such as “The Force Awakens” – coupled with upgraded theater features such as immersive sound, improved sight lines, and even dinner and drinks – can help win back straying movie buffs. The Force Awakens has grossed $544.6 million, and that’s before its upcoming release in China next month.

Disney purchased the “Star Wars” franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012, and it’s now planning a new trilogy of films as well as standalone installments through 2019.
LOS ANGELES (AP) “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has reached $1 billion at the box office, reaching the milestone with record-setting hyper speed.
The film released to an estimated $238 million in North America, 14 percent ahead of “Jurassic World“, which debuted at $208.8 million this summer. Especially when you consider that Star Wars has yet to open in certain countries, including the world’s second movie market: China.
Have you seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
So far, the J.J. Abrams-directed movie has earned USD 422.4 million overseas and USD 391 million at domestic box office, pushing its worldwide total to USD 813.4 million.
Force handily surpasses the second-week take of Jurassic World ($106.6 million) in June for the biggest second weekend ever.
That represents both the biggest Christmas holiday result and the best second weekend for a film in history.

The other top moneymakers, this weekend, include “The Other Guys” with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, #2 with a healthy $39 million. The $60 million film reunites the “Silver Linings Playbook” team of Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper with director David O. Russell. The remake of “Point Break” opened with $10.2 million. It was bested by The Big Short, which, after a successful run in limited release, expanded nationwide to 1,585 theaters and earned $10.5 million.
